28.08.14 Second pole position in succession at the Nürburgring for Wolfgang Kaufmann

Strong qualifying performance at the VLN 6h race remained unrewarded due to a crash.

The Eifel showed her true face this past weekend. Instead of summer heat and dry asphalt, the weather over the 24 kilometres of the Nürburgring went crazy. It was damp at times, dry at others, and finding the right tactic was a lottery.

In qualifying, Wolfgang Kaufmann caught a break with a predominantly dry lap, and put the Kremer Racing Porsche 997 KR on pole position in the SP7 class, for the second consecutive time. 8th position overall on the starting grid, right among the extremely strong field of GT3 entrants, was a sweet bonus. “The lap wasn't perfect but very close to perfection, given the circumstances”, said the professional driver from Molsberg.

The team's plan of attack for the Opel 6 hours ADAC Ruhr Pokal Rennen saw Kaufmann take charge of the Porsche for the first two stints of the race. At the start, on a dry track, he defended his place among the top 10 and stayed in touch with the lead group. “we were on the attack to maintain a good position in the race”, Kaufmann explained, “and that worked out fine, I was able to match the leaders' speed. But we then shortened my second stint as it began to rain heavily. Edgar Salewski then took over our Kremer Porsche in 1st position in the SP7 class, and drove a perfect stint.”

At the next driver change, the car was put on slick tyres, which turned out not to be the correct choice. Unfortunately the Kremer Porsche had an accident at the Quiddelbacher Höhe section of the track.

Following his DNF last weekend with a gearbox failure in the Youngtimer at Zolder, Wolfgang Kaufmann now has high hopes for success on the following weekend. With the #14 Porsche 996 GT3 Cup of Scuderia M66, he will take part in the 24 hour race at Zolder in Belgium.
